Beautiful Kimmy

I’m writing this tutorial using Photoshop CC.  I am assuming the reader has a basic working knowledge of  the Photoshop program.  I believe the instructions should work with various other versions, but they are not tested on any other version.

This tutorial is my own creation.  Any similarity to any other tutorial is not done purposely or knowingly (aside from the fact that the process is pretty similar in most tutorials).  J

Supplies I used for this tutorial:
Poser -  Kimmy by Designs by Norella.  It is PTU and can be purchased here.  Make sure you register and receive your license from the website to use this tube.

Kit – Something Beautiful  by Tinas Magical Scrap World.  It is FTU and can be downloaded  here.

Font – Kismet NF.  It is a free font and can be downloaded  here.

Abbreviations:
SS – Screen Shot
DS – Drop Shadow
B&E – Bevel & Emboss

Instructions:
Open the folder that has your Kit elements in it.
Open  the PSD file of your tube.
Open a new working canvas sized 700 px by 700 px with a transparent background.

From the Frames folder of the kit, add flowerframe1 and resize it to about 275%.  Move the frame to the upper left side of the canvas.

Add stringframe1 and resize it to about 285%.  Position it so that if overlaps the right bottom corner of flowerframe1.

Add paper21, resize to about 225%.  Drag the paper so that it completely covers the inside of the flower frame.  Drag the paper21 layer below the flowerframe layer.

Click on the flowerframe layer to make it the active layer.  Select the magic wand tool and click inside the empty part of the flower frame.  Make sure it selects the entire empty space of the frame.  Now from the main menu choose:  Select > Modify > Expand.  Expand the selection by at least 5 pixels.  Then Inverse your selection (Ctrl + Shift + I).  Now all of the canvas except the empty part of the frame is selected.

Click back on the paper layer to activate it.  Right click on the paper and select Rasterize layer.  Then press the Delete key on your keyboard.   Voila, now your paper should be all gone except the portion in the center of the frame.  Deselect the area (Ctrl + D).

Now add paper11, resize to about 225%.  Drag the paper so that it completely covers the inside of the stringframe.  Drag the paper11 layer below the stringframe layer.

Click on the stringframe layer to make it the active layer.  Select the magic wand tool and click inside the empty part of the stringframe.

Switch over to your tube file.  Make sure you have hidden all the layers except the main one.  Use the
Rectangular Marquee Tool to draw a box around just the part of the tube you want to display in the flower frame.  Copy (Ctrl + C) the selection.
****Note:  If you are working with a multiple layer tube, you may need to save the image you are using as png file  with only the layers you want turned on.  Then you can open up the png file and use it to copy from.

Go back to your working canvas and paste (Ctrl + V) the selection.  Make sure the layer you are working with is above the paper21 layer.  Resize the selection from the tube to fit inside your frame.  Once you like what is being displayed inside the frame.  Right click on the layer and select “Create Clipping Mask”.  This trims away any part of the pasted in selection that falls outside of the trimmed paper.  To enhance the clarity of the tube, from the main menu choose:  Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen.  Repeat the steps to copy and paste the part of the tube you want to display in the string frame as well clipping the tube layer to paper11 layer.

After the face layer is clipped to Paper11, from the main menu choose:  Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal.  This flips the face so it is looking in the opposite direction.

Next Add the full tube to the canvas and resize it to fit.  Position the full body tube to the left of the canvas overlapping with the flowerframe in the upper corner.
****Note if you are using a full sized tube like Kimmy you will have to shrink the size considerably.  I shrunk the tube to 20% and still had to adjust it a bit.

Make sure this is now the uppermost layer.  Flip the tube using the Flip Horizontal command from above.  Right click on the tube layer and select Blending Options.

Select the Drop Shadow (DS) option and mirror the settings below then click ok:
  • Adding DS make the images stand out from the canvas.  You can play around with the angle to change the effect.  I prefer 120 for the angle of most of my elements.  Once you have the angle set anytime DS is applied it will use the same settings.

Apply the Sharpen filter as well to enhance the clarity.

Now let’s add the background.  Add paper28 and resize it to cover the entire tag.  Drag the paper28 layer to the very bottom of the layers so it is behind everything else.

Add a new layer and add the name you want to the bottom right side.  I chase to use Kismet NF font sized to 172 pt.  I then applied a golden colored style to it to make it stand out more.

To frame the tag, add a new layer and make it the topmost layer.  Then using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, draw a box around the entire tag.  From the main menu choose:  Select > Modify > Border and choose a width of 15 pixels.  Use the paint bucket tool to fill the border with color.  Then you can apply any complimentary style that you want.  I play around with different ones until I like the way it looks.  After you add the first layer effect, deselect the selection so you can see the full effect of the style on the border.

From here you can add whatever other elements you like and resize them and position them as you want.  Below is a list of what I chose to do.  You can choose to use the same ones or experiment with other elements.

  • Added flower2  above the flowerframe  layer and resized it 139%.  I overlapped the flowerframe.  Added DS.
  • Added flower3 below  that layer and resized it 139%.  I slightly overlapped the flowers.  Added DS.
  • Above the stringframe layer I added clip1 resized to 145% and positioned it so that it was to the right of the tube and over lapped the frame.  Added DS.
  • Above the clip1 layer I added butterfly4  and flipped it horizontally.  I positioned it so it looked like it was perched on the heart and added DS.
  • Added the sweetflower1  and resized it to 150%, positioning it below the heart.  Added DS.
  • Added glassbutterfly3  to the right side of flowerframe.  Added DS.

The last step is to be sure to add the proper artists copyright and save as a .png file!

Thank you for trying  my tutorial.  If you would like to offer any feedback, please comment on the blog and let me know if you have questions or suggestions to improve the instructions.
